happy thanksgiving comments

New York: Happy Thanksgiving comments It’s Thanksgiving Day today. It now primarily identified as a secular holiday, but it began as historically religious observation to give thanks to God.
The day is presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941.
The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive the brutal winter. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians.
The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. However, the traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.

national dog show 2009

national dog show 2009

The National Dog Show Presented By Purina shown on NBC following the end of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is another part of the classic celebration. While some will switch over to watch football, some others might stick around to watch the National Dog Show. This event started airing following the parade back in 2002, and now it is definitely part of the tradition for this day.
As a fan of dogs and all animals, I'm a fan of anything that puts these creatures that are our best friends in the spotlight. Dogs and their feline counterparts give us owners years of love and support just by being around us.
On Thanksgiving, it is important to remember our smaller friends as well. They add something to our lives each and every day, and some even say that pet owners add years onto their lives just by having a pet. We don't own them. They most definitely own us.
As for dogs, the animals featured in today's show - we have 75 million dogs in 45 million homes around the country. That is according to the man that brought the show to NBC. That is a lot of dogs.

Google Inc. is apologizing for a racially offensive image of the first lady that appears at the top of the list when users search for pictures of Michelle Obama on its site.
Google placed a text ad above the image titled "Offensive Search Results" that states "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."
Users who then click on the ad are directed to a letter from Google that explains its results "can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries" but notes that Google doesn't endorse content on these Web sites.
Google says its search formula relies on thousands of factors to rank a Web page's importance, and says it doesn't eliminate search results simply because of user complaints. However, Google says it will take down images in certain cases, such as when required by law to do so.
"We apologize if you've had an upsetting experience using Google," the company wrote.

turkey recipes thanksgiving

turkey recipes thanksgiving

Some people love bringing their turkeys and some people hate it. Brining often adds a certain juiciness to your Thanksgiving turkey and there are plenty of recipes you can follow if you want the perfect brine. But here's the bringing recipe we think is best. And it's easy too!
The most popular (and what we think is the best) way to brine a turkey is
Alton Brown's way. This Food Network recipe has an average of 5/5 stars and has 2,487 reviews on it. That's huge!
Since the recipe has so many awesome reviews and it''s been rated as an easy recipe, we think absolutely anyone can do it. If you're still feeling nervous after reading the recipe, you can check out an actual
video of Alton Brown brining a turkey. Also, sometimes it helps to read what other people are writing in their reviews; they often have great tips!
Here's what you need:
* 1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey
For the brine:
* 1 cup kosher salt* 1/2 cup light brown sugar* 1 gallon vegetable stock* 1 tablespoon black peppercorns* 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries* 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped candied ginger* 1 gallon heavily iced water
For the aromatics:
* 1 red apple, sliced* 1/2 onion, sliced* 1 cinnamon stick* 1 cup water* 4 sprigs rosemary* 6 leaves sage* Canola oil
And here's how you do it:
-Combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.
Early on the day or the night before you'd like to eat:
-Combine the brine, water and ice in the 5-gallon bucket. Place the thawed turkey (with innards removed) breast side down in brine. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 8 to 16 hours, turning the bird once half way through brining.
-Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Remove the bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard the brine.
-Place the bird on roasting rack inside a half sheet pan and pat dry with paper towels.
-Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and 1 cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Add steeped aromatics to the turkey's cavity along with the rosemary and sage. Tuck the wings underneath the bird and coat the skin liberally with canola oil.
-Roast the turkey on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F for 30 minutes. Insert a probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Set the thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees F. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let the turkey rest, loosely covered with foil or a large mixing bowl for 15 minutes before carving.
Enjoy your extra juicy, succulent turkey!

Where can a singer thrust a man's face into his crotch, walk his dancers on a leash and force his keyboardist into a lip lock -- all while mewling like a hair metal hero of yore?
The American Music Awards, believe it or not.
Adam Lambert closed Sunday's AMAs -- usually one of the year's sleepiest of awards shows -- with a stunt-laden performance of "For Your Entertainment," the sexed-up title track of his debut album, landing in stores Monday.
"I'm about to turn up the heat," Lambert promised during the song's chorus, after a male dancer simulated oral sex on the "American Idol" alum. Moments later, Lambert grabbed one of his backing musicians by the nape of the neck and gave him an open-mouthed kiss.

jennifer lopez falls

The American Music Awards last night had their share of "Holy @%$!" moments, with Adam Lambert (video), Whitney Houston, and Lady Gaga all making performances that have people talking and checking Youtube this morning.
Jennifer Lopez made her musical return last night as well, in a performance as notable for a miscue as for anything else. She performed her new song, "Louboutins," with a phalanx of dancers dressed as boxers. Two things about this one show that Lopez is still a star. To start with, she didn't miss a beat on the fall. That was a pretty good jump, she landed flat and bounced right back up.
Here's the difference between Lopez (a star) and me (a schlep). Lopez falls after climbing a staircase made of human beings, and literally standing on the back of a guy while belting out her notice to the world that she has returned. Meanwhile, I stub my little toe on the side of the refrigerator in the middle of the night coming to raid the fridge, and I have to call in sick the next day and I limp for a week.

global warming emails

global warming emails

Global warming skeptics were quick to pillage through emails after hackers broke into the server of a prominent British university that researches climate change. The hackers were successful in obtaining emails that allegedly prove global warming is overstated and human influence on the environment is overstated. Documents within the hacked email include discussion among researchers whether current trends could be disputed by skeptics and how to best combat those arguments.Drafts of the technical documents and photos were discovered that could spark major debates in the world of science and administrations that are promoting economic policy based on the results of that scientific theory. For those who remain leery about whether the globe is actually warming or cooling, these documents could shed negative light within the scientific community.According to a climatologist who faults the current global-warming hysteria, Patrick Michaels says, “This is not a smoking gun; this is a mushroom cloud.”However, it is revealed that the bulk of the emails were simply about how best to describe the cooling trend currently taking place and how it contradicts what researchers predicted in the past.

The lower slopes of this mountain are formed from the mudstones and sandstones that were deposited during the period of Devonia.
The higher reaches of the Blorenge Mountain are formed with the set of limestones, sandstones and mudstones of Carboniferous age. The flat terrain of this mountain is formed from the rough sandstones that lie down at the border of the Coal Measures and Millstone Grit.
When glacier of the Usk Valley flowed to its north during the ice ages, the shape the Blorenge Mountain was modified. The Punchbowl is the name of eastern side of the Blorenge. Most parts of this hill are open and in the access of walkers. There are several bridleways and footpaths which run over and to it. Hillwalking point can also be found on the Blorenge that runs around it.

climate depot

climate depot

In the mid 1970’s during the energy crisis, many families and communities decided to give up lighting their homes and trees for the holidays. Homes in my neighborhood didn’t turn on their outdoor holiday lights again for many years, even after the crisis had passed. Well, here we go again. This time it’s a climate crisis, caused to some extent, by an ever-growing reliance on carbon-based fuels. And guess what powers most holiday displays – yep, mostly green-house-gas-creating-carbon-based-coal-fired power plants. Maybe it’s our fear of dampening any holiday spending during the other current crisis - economic crisis - but I haven’t yet heard communities, governments or environmentalists suggest that we stop our holiday lighting plans this year.

Dancing With the Stars results November 17 and Dancing with the Stars elimination. Monday’s “Dancing with Stars” episode took a very special turn when audience voting determined the fate of two participants, despite the scores judges had given them. Model Joanna Krupa surprised everyone not only when she scored an impressive 81 out of 90 but also when she got less audience votes. On the other hand, judges gave Kelly Osbourne a lower score but the audience voting helped her qualify for next week’s finale.

Krupa and her partner Derek Hough thus were shown the door while Kelly and her partner Louis Van Amstel will compete with other two couples-Mya-Dmitry Chaplin and Donny Osmond-Kym Johnson. The three couples will be nudging one another next week to clinch the title and the mirrorball trophy.

Bruno Tonioli, one of the judges on the show was all praise for a “gleaming, beautiful and weightless” Krupa. He compared her to a “butterfly gently gliding over a pine meadow” after she performed a waltz in the current season.

Monday’s episode on ABC also witnessed a barefoot Melissa Rycroft shaking legs with Tony Dovolani.

The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side,
rear, and rollover crashes based on good ratings in the institute's tests.

Subaru was the only car manufacturer to have winners in all four classes in which it competes. The manufacturer won five awards overall for 2010.

Ford and its subsidiary, Volvo, won six awards to Volkswagen and Audi's five and Chrylser's four.

Cars from the largest automakers, however, were noticeably absent. A news release issued by the Insurance Institute noted that while Toyota and its Lexus and Scion subsidiaries did well in 2009 with 11 award winners, they were completely shut out this year.

And the new Honda Accord didn't measure up in terms of roof strength ratings after two years of being named a Top Safety Pick. The Ford Fusion, the institute noted, was dropped from the list for the same reason.

Seized tanker's captain dies, Alabama attacked again

HARADHEERE, Somalia (Reuters) - The captain of a Virgin-Islands owned chemical tanker hijacked this week has died from gunshot wounds sustained when the ship was attacked, a Somali pirate said on Wednesday.

The was a pause in hijackings during monsoon rains, but the Somali sea gangs have stepped up attacks in the past two months, especially off the Seychelles as pirates extend their range to evade navies patrolling off the Horn of Africa.

"The captain of the chemical tanker died last night from gunshot wounds he got during the hijack," a pirate who gave his name as Mohamed told Reuters. "The ship is headed for Haradheere with the dead captain."

The European Union naval force EU Navfor force operating in the area said on Tuesday that pirates had seized the 22,294 DWT tanker MV Theresa VIII 180 nautical miles northwest of the Seychelles with 28 North Korean crew on board.

The ship that is operated from Singapore had been sailing to the Kenyan port of Mombasa but had turned round after being seized near the Indian Ocean archipelago. EU Navfor said on Wednesday that pirates had also attacked the same U.S. ship they hijacked in April this year.

lorenzo von matterhorn

lorenzo von matterhorn

The Name 'Lorenzo Von Matterhorn' is quite the rage amongst web surfers today, not bad for being the entirely fictional pseudonym of an entirely fictional How I Met Your Mother character. Lorenzo Von Matterhorn is but one of Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) many non de plume's on the show. Von Matterhorn made an appearance this evening, setting off an explosion of web interest – most of it propelled by the discovery of a Wikipedia page that had been created for the character. The page is a lot of fun, mostly talking about Matterhorn's afflictions – he suffers from phallumegaly, or bigness of penis disorder – and various hobbies. Problem is, Wikipedia – as we all know – is a bastion of fact, and so this little bit of How I Met Your Mother fun had to go.

carrie prejean sextape stream

carrie prejean sextape stream

How much did you know about Carrie Prejean sometime back ? Was she one of the celebrities you would like to read about? Chances are that she was percieved as just another model (Miss USA 2009 first runner-up) struggling in the big bad world of modelling and showbiz.

However, controversies one after another have been courting Carrie Prejean who has become more famous with every controversy and have been benefited immensely in terms of visibility.

First it was her response to a question about same-sex marriage during the 2009 Miss USA pageant which stirred controversy. Prejean was asked by pageant judge Perez Hilton whether she believed every U.S. state should legalize same-sex marriage. She responded “I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.”

On May 4, 2009, a photograph of Prejean partially nude with her back turned to the camera appeared on a celebrity gossip blog, leading to the directors of the Miss California USA pageant investigating Prejean for potentially violating a contract clause. However, she retained the crown.

K2 Productions, which produces the Miss California USA pageant, terminated Prejean’s contract on June 10, 2009, which was approved by Trump, citing “continued breach of contract issues”. Prejean stated that K2 Productions wanted her to pose for Playboy and appear on the reality television show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!. Keith Lewis, the executive director of K2 Productions, stated that Prejean had requested to be notified of all offers for appearances.

why wont my parakeet eat my diarrhea

why wont my parakeet eat my diarrhea

There's a short and sad answer to the question "Why won't my parakeet eat my diarrhea". Your fellow human beings are weird.

There's something of a new feature in Google. When you put in part of a question or a search request then it offers you a number of alternatives. You can of course still go on to complete your own query, but these suggestions are there for you if you wish to use them.

Like almost everything Google does this is a self-learning feature of the software. It looks at what other people have gone on to ask as the full question after they've put in the same beginning as you have. So, you have put in "why won't" and Google says that a sufficient number of people have gone on to ask "Why won't my parakeet eat my diarrhea" for that to be the number one query which starts with "Why won't..."

Which I think you'll agree, is really quite worrying, that there is a large enough portion of the human race asking such a question that the software has been trained in this manner. Even if it has been deliberately trained, as a joke, that's still a fairly odd if not bizarre insight into the human psyche.

Similar funnies turn up with other variations: "Why can..." brings up "Why can't I own a Canadian" to which the answer is of course you can but you have to marry one first.

"Why" on its own brings up "Why is my poop green" which argues for a number of people out there having had a bad experience at the Taco drive through. "Why is" gives us "Why is there a dead Pakistani on my couch" which sounds like a punchline. "What is" gives us "What is love" which is indeed an interesting question which the sages have been trying to answer for millenia. It might be a bit much to ask Google to answer it though.

This actually all looks like a variation on "googlewhacking". That's the attempt to get your page as the only entry in the entire Google index for some phrase or another. You do have to be pretty inventive to manage it now, given the size of the index. My assumption is that this is a variation: a game being played to see who can get the most outrageous suggestions out of Google by asking the question a few times and seeing if it comes up as one of those suggestions. And I would think that whoever came up with "Why won't my parakeet eat my diarrhea?" has managed to win a very large number of points.

prejean sextape

prejean sextape

Prejean Sextape,Carrie Prejean Sextape: some might remember, is the California beauty queen who gained instant ignominy in some circles by agreeing with President Obama’s ridiculous notion that marriage is a union between one man and one woman.

This was said to make Prejean outrageously conservative although Obama, who is a male and said the same thing throughout the endless presidential campaign, was ranked as the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate a year ago now. That must be what passes for progress nowadays.

Both liberals and conservatives have been bickering and chuckling and pointing fingers of hypocrisy ever since. Also, Prejean had breast augmentation, some keen-eyed critics noted, which is certainly unimaginable for any American female let alone ones successfully participating in the beauty business.

Recently many forum users are reporting problems with certain viruses. It's possible that AntiVir detects and reports a corresponding file, but cannot fight or remove it effectively, since it's always recreated instantly. Currently known variants:
•TR/Agent.its

•TR/Agent.imh

•TR/PSW.Delf.AH

•TR/Spy.Delf.tge

•TR/PSW.Kates.C.25

•TR/Drop.Agent.qna.2
Please also consider:

•This scenario may also apply if you are unable to update AntiVir - especially over an extended period of time. A characteristic symptom is that the update report contains the error message "HTTP status code 403" or "403 Forbidden". If that's the case, please use a "manual" / offline update first.

•Also typical: If this malware is active, it may prevent execution of the registry editor (regedit.exe) and command prompt (cmd.exe). In this case these applications can only be started after renaming their executables.

•In a few cases these viruses seemingly were also able to prevent installation of the paid products (AntiVir Premium, resp. Avira Premium Security Suite), due to the fact that the license activation was impossible.

rihanna 20 20 full interview

rihanna 20 20 full interview

LOS ANGELESIn her first televised interview since being assaulted by her former boyfriend, Chris Brown, Rihanna told 20/20's Diane Sawyer that she felt ashamed to have been involved with the "Kiss Kiss" singer in the first place.

"That's embarrassing that that's the type of person that I fell in love with," Rihanna said in an interview that aired in full Friday night after being teased on ABC's Good Morning America. "[I was] so far in love, so unconditional that I went back. It's humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? It's a traumatizing experience."

Rihanna told Sawyer that during the Feb. 8 attack, Brown put her in a headlock twice and bit her ears and fingers. Still, she found herself crawling back to the fellow R&B star soon after the incident, which took place on the eve of the Grammy Awards.

"I stayed. I even went back after he beat me, which was wrong," admitted Rihanna. "But again ... I'm a human being, and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. And all these expectations, I'm not perfect. Also it's pretty natural for that to be the first reaction. ... It's completely normal to go back. You start lying to yourself. The minute the physical wounds go away you want this thing to go away. This is a memory you don't want to have ever again."

Rihanna said she later realized how important it was for her to send the right message to the people who look up to her.

"When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part," she said. "I couldn't be responsible for that. Even if Chris never hit me again, who's to say their boyfriend won't? Who's to say they won't kill these girls? I didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls' lives until that happened."

droid phone reviews

droid phone reviews

We’re getting this out of the way now: Motorola’s Droid is the best Google phone on the market. Maybe that’s not saying a whole lot. The Droid’s only competitors in the U.S. are T-Mobile’s 1-year-old G1, its chubby younger brother the MyTouch 3G and HTC’s Droid Eris, a $99 Verizon Wireless phone that comes out Friday — the same day as the Motorola Droid — with an already-outdated Android operating system. Here’s another one: Droid is the best phone on Verizon. As we wrote last week, the Droid marks a notable shift for the nation’s largest carrier. Verizon -- often renowned for its service, not its selection of phones — seems to be wisely minimizing its interference with handset makers.

What we get is an attractive and fast smart phone packed to the brim with features for $199 (with a two-year contract).

The Droid hardware is a technical feat. It has a 5-megapixel camera with a flash that doesn’t perform exceptionally well but still pretty great for a phone. The speaker is pleasantly loud. The touch-screen screen is gorgeous — larger than the iPhone’s with way more pixels per inch.

Oh, and it has a keyboard.

After spending plenty of time with the iPhone and MyTouch, we realized just how much we don’t miss physical keyboards. Granted, the Droid’s isn’t as nice as most Blackberry keyboards. We spewed just as many typos on the Droid’s black-and-white-and-brown keyboard as we did on software keyboards. Only problem is that we’re not offered automatic corrections like we get on the touch-screen keyboard.

Impressively, the slide-out keyboard doesn’t add much thickness compared with the iPhone — the Droid is only slightly bigger and noticeably heavier. The keyboard is a nice option (geeks will enjoy the pro shortcuts), but if you’re not digging it, you never have to pull it out.

Motorola takes a step back with its navigation buttons. Competing Android phones use a scroll ball — you know, that little nub that makes the Blackberry so good for e-mail. Instead, the Droid opts for a four-way rocker navigation with a center button, which sits next to the keyboard and provides little utility.

Under the hood, the Droid runs a version of Android 2.0, becoming the first device that has it. That means it packs features and polish you won’t see on the other guys — most notably the free Google Maps Navigation software.

Android has really come a long way in a year. The software keyboard is smarter, the included apps more sophisticated and the subtleties of switching between programs more natural.

But for as far as Google’s operating system has come, it remains several steps behind Apple’s iPhone in many respects. Even though we ripped on Apple for leaving out the copy-and-paste feature for so long, there’s something to be said about how it was finally implemented. It’s simple and works incredibly well.

On the flip side, selecting text on the Droid drives us nuts. The option is hidden behind a menu screen; there’s no clever magnifying glass to help you grab the right section; and to copy, you have to again find the option somewhere in the menus.

This design choice underlines a prevalent problem that still plagues Android. Some fairly common actions are hidden, including the basic ability to delete apps.

(Here’s a tip so you don’t look like a stooge at the Verizon store: Press the lock icon and turn to the right to open the phone. The majority of people who played with our review unit couldn’t figure out how to get into the phone.)

Button layouts can vary widely from app to app. Transitioning between the many programs that can run simultaneously works well enough, but some can’t be closed while others gobble up battery power with no warning.

Android’s Marketplace offers more than 10,000 apps — that’s certainly not on par with Apple’s library of 100,000, but Android’s selection covers most of the main utilities.

As a game system, it’s severely lacking. As a media player, it’s even worse.

The iPhone can sufficiently replace a standalone iPod. The Droid won’t. Getting songs onto the thing is a hassle. No media sync, no smart playlists, no TV shows or movies.

Sure, we love some of the features Motorola built exclusively for this handset — things that could never be done on the iPhone without Apple engineers building it themselves. For example, the Droid phone book integrates with your Facebook contacts.

But these little perks don’t make up for the intuitiveness and maturity of the iPhone’s operating system that Android has yet to match.

Yet, as a phone, the Droid is top-notch. It integrates seamlessly with Google Voice and runs on Verizon, a telecom with a superior reputation for reliable call coverage — unlike AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the iPhone.

For at least the next couple of months, Droid will wear the crowns of best Android device and best Verizon phone.

Sandra Bullock is in a nasty custody battle with former porn star Janine Lindemulder, the ex-wife of her husband Jesse James. The actress is seeking full custody of James and Lindemulder’s 5-year-old daughter Sunny.
Bullock, 45, and James, 40, have been raising Sunny together since January, when Lindemulder was sent to prison for tax evasion. Lindemulder now claims Bullock only wants the child because she can’t have children of her own.
In a letter to the judge at Lindemulder’s sentencing, Bullock claimed Sunny was often left alone in her mother’s care as Lindemulder was “asleep from drug use.”
“I am aware that Janine has claimed many times that my desire to have [the girl], was because I could not have children of my own but that couldn't be farther from the truth,” Bullock wrote. “I myself have stopped working like I used to in order to be here with Jesse and the kids because we are on constant high alert never knowing what condition Janine will be in, and even more concerning, the condition [the girl] will be in.”
In an interview with Good Morning America, Lindemulder admits she has made “horrific choices in the past” but is ready to start a new life with Sunny and husband Jeremy Aikman, who has been in federal prison on gun and drug charges.

6500 home buyer tax credit

6500 home buyer tax credit

More than 6,000 Coloradans have taken advantage of the first time home buyers tax credit and local realtors are joining the chorus asking Congress to extend the first time homebuyers tax credit. It's set to expire at the end of the month. Congress could do that as early as today. Think of the government's Cash for Clunkers program when you consider the $8,000 credit. Cash for Clunkers led to a short term spike in car sales, just like the home tax credit has caused a small boom in one corner of the housing sector. That's the rub for real estate economists like Tom Thibodeau at the University of Colorado."I don't think it's going to be encouraging people who would otherwise not want to be homeowners, to become homeowners," Thibodeau says. And Thibodeau worries the credit won't help the long term recovery of the housing market. But, he says, "it's going to encourage people to buy sooner than they might otherwise feel comfortable buying, and to that extent it's going to help stabilize prices."For More Detail:

Mark Teahen

Mark Teahen

The White Sox have traded Josh Fields and Chris Getz to Kansas City in exchange for infielder-outfielder Mark Teahen, the White Sox have confirmed.
Teahen hit .271 while connecting on 12 home runs and driving in 50 runs last season. The 28-year-old lefty has spent his entire five-year career with the Royals. The move likely means Jermaine Dye, who is a free agent, will be replaced in right field by Teahen. Fields, who was supplanted as the everyday third baseman by Gordon Beckham, also spent time in left field and first base for the White Sox this year. His .222 batting average in 79 games, along with Beckham's stellar rookie year made his move more likely.
Getz, a second baseman, hit .261 in his first full year in the majors and stole 25 bases.

In political circles, this is what is known as an “off-year election,’’ meaning the races are occurring in an odd-numbered year when there are no congressional races, much less a presidential contest, to worry about.
But, for hundreds of local officials and challengers and for those they hope to represent next year, Tuesday’s elections are big.
Voters will be choosing county legislators, judges, town supervisors and mayors, highway superintendents, clerks and others. Many of these officials will help control multimillion-dollar budgets, and some will have to make key decisions about where development should take place in their jurisdictions and what areas should perhaps be set aside for stronger environmental protection. They will have to negotiate contracts and work with lawyers. They will have to balance pressing infrastructure demands with the need to keep taxes low. They will have to get the most of their public employees and provide the best service possible to residents.
But, first, voters have to decide who is worthy of these elected positions. And, yes, every vote does matter.

SEPTA on Strike

SEPTA on Strike

The World Series is over, with the Yankees beating the Phillies 8-6 in game 5, sealing the Phillies' fate. With that, as quick as you can blink SEPTA is on strike.

As of 3 AM, with SEPTA on strike, most SEPTA services in Philadelphia ceased as bus, trolley and subway operators hit the picket lines. SEPTA's largest union, SEPTA Transport Workers Union Local 243, had promised not to strike during the World Series, but with the quick exit of the Phillies, it was strike on.

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter responded to the news of SEPTA on strike by blasting the union for what he called a "surprise" strike. As he noted, “People had already gone to bed. Some people were already at their job. To find out you can’t get home is the height of the lack of consideration.”

Burlington Northern

Burlington Northern
Berkshire Hathaway, the investment vehicle of Warren E. Buffett, said on Tuesday that it planned to buy the 77.4 percent of Burlington Northern Santa Fe it did not already own for $34 billion in cash and stock, in the largest deal in Berkshire history.

The deal, which will also include the assumption of $10 billion in Burlington Northern debt, represents what Mr. Buffett said was a big bet on the United States. He told CNBC in an interview that railroad operators cannot do well unless American businesses were producing goods and customers were buying them.

“It’s an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States,” he said in a written statement. “I love these bets.”
In the interview with CNBC, Mr. Buffett said that the deal came together quickly. He made a proposal to Matthew K. Rose, Burlington Northern’s chairman and chief executive. Mr. Rose took the proposal to his board — and got an answer in about 15 minutes.

Election Day November 2009

Election Day November 2009

Election Day is approaching this evening, with the main focus being on three particular elections as we see Virginia and New Jersey both having a race to become Governor. The final and probably most storied election race is the U.S. House election in New York, which was formally held by Rep. John McHugh (R-NY), who went on to become Secretary of the Army.

In a strange twist involving Democrat Bill Owens, who was considered too conservative, and Republican Dierdre Scozzafava, who was considered too liberal, late entry Conservative Doug Hoffman entered the race, and received backing from many GOP heavyweights including Sarah Palin.

This literally forced Scozzafava out of the running, and although she will be still on the ballot, she then surprised everyone by supporting Democrat Bill Owens.

Albeit unlikely, but possible, could the Democrats win all three electoral races? Or will it be victory for the Republicans? Whatever the outcome, i’m sure it will raise a few eyebrows in the Wednesday morning papers.

Dallas Cowboys VS Seattle Seahawks

Dallas Cowboys VS Seattle Seahawks

At the start of this month, the Dallas Cowboys fell to 2-2 with an overtime loss at Denver, and everyone in the football world seemed to think that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was a disaster. What a difference a month can make.Romo is having his third straight big game today against the Seattle Seahawks, and the Cowboys appear headed for their third straight win.Against Seattle today, Romo has gone 18-of-31 for 220 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He's on his way to his third straight game with multiple touchdown passes and no picks.Miles Austin is, again, the Cowboys' leading receiver, but Romo is distributing the ball to all his receivers: Eight different Cowboys have caught a pass from Romo.Late in the third quarter, the Cowboys lead the Seahawks 35-10.
