times square van

New York City's Times Square reopened to traffic after a bomb squad found no explosive devices in an abandoned van parked in the area. The van was seen around 11 a.m. Wednesday by patrol officers on Broadway between 41st and 42nd Streets, and counterterrorism and bomb squad crews responded.
The area was blocked off and two high-rise buildings home to Nasdaq and publishing company Conde Nast were partially evacuated but allowed back in around 1 p.m. Nasdaq said its trading was unaffected. Conde Nast was in the process of evacuating when the order was lifted. The 1992 Dodge van was parked in a row of cars beneath some of the large billboards that ring the square. Police used a robot to examine the vehicle, then approached on foot and peered in the windows.
The van had tinted windows and a placard from a nonexistent law enforcement agency on the dashboard. It had no license plates, but a temporary registration was found inside.
There have been no corresponding threats involving the vehicle, said chief NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne.
"Its presence in Times Square just before New Year's Eve causes us concern, and that's why we're taking extra precautions," he said.
New Year's Eve in Times Square draws hundreds of thousands of revelers each year. The NYPD takes extra precautions around this time of year, doing sweeps of garages looking for suspicious vehicles, Mr. Browne said.

mike leach fired

It's hard to imagine Mike Leach's 10-year tenure at Texas Tech ending in a more fittingly bizarre fashion. The law school grad sent his lawyer to a courthouse in hopes of getting his suspension lifted, only to come back with a termination letter.
Leach's one-of-a-kind persona was defined by defiance. Ultimately, it brought about his demise.
Leach, who went 84-43 and took his team to 10 straight bowl games, was ostensibly
fired for his mistreatment of a player with a mild concussion, but don't be fooled. The allegations by Adam James' family were a convenient excuse for school president Guy Bailey and athletic director Gerald Myers to rid themselves of a coach who, despite bringing the school considerable prestige, never fully earned their respect and butted heads with the administration for years (most notably in last winter's contentious contract negotiations). When the school rushed to suspend him Monday, we all knew where this was headed.Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/stewart_mandel/12/30/leach-fired/?cnn=yes

west memphis 3

west memphis 3

16 years ago in West Memphis, Arkansas, bodies of three 8-year-old Cub Scouts were found in a ditch called Robin Hills. Back then, Three teens, Damien Echols 18, Jessie Misskelley Jr. 17 and Jason Baldwin 16, were accused of the murder.
When the boys bodies were found, their arms and legs were bound by shoe laces, bodies were bruised and mutilated, how sick! How in the world could someone do that?
The killers of these boys wwere dubbed as the the West Memphis 3.
At the time, back in 1993 justice has been served. MissKkelley and Baldwin had life sentences and Echols was on death row.
However, with
new DNA evidence from the defense and also new eyewitness statements, Pamela Hobbs, the mother of one of those boys who was murdered says the teens who were accused of killing her son and the other boys deserve a new trial.

"I wanted to believe in our justice system," said Hobbs, now 45. She moved to Blytheville, Arkansas, shortly after the 1993 trial. "But time heals all wounds, and you start looking at things differently."
Her public change of heart has been supported by new evidence presented by the defense over the past few years. In 2007, DNA and forensic evidence tests revealed no physical evidence at the crime scene that linked the three teens to murders. The evidence was presented to the state.
Furthermore, DNA that might belong to two other men was found in the knot used to tie Christopher.
Three eye witnesses, who resided next to one of the victims, filed affidavits in October with the Arkansas Supreme Court. The witnesses said they saw the second-graders with Terry Hobbs the night before the bodies were found by police.
The statement from the witnesses contradicted Hobbs' statements to police and in court that he never saw his stepson, Stevie, on the day of the murder.
"They [authorities] never really did any investigation," said Dennis Riordan, Echols' defense attorney out of San Francisco, California. "They never interviewed Hobbs. The fact that the witnesses saw him, and they realized for the first time, it was very significant."
Pamela Hobbs divorced Terry Hobbs in 2004 because of marital problems stemming from the pain that followed her son's death, she said. She declined to comment on whether she thought her ex-husband saw the 8-year-old boys.
"I want someone to put a stop to this. I'm tired of this stuff. No one understands or cares what this does to us as parents over and over again."" said Terry Hobbs.
Who ever murdered these boys, should be found and put to death.

restaurants open on christmas day 2009

restaurants open on christmas day 2009

Okay, so you opened the presents. You had a lovely, argument-free family sit-down breakfast undistracted by the aforementioned presents, which the kids loved more than the boxes in which they came (your mileage may vary). Now, though, you want to do something other than stare at your yule log video. So, what's open on Christmas Day? If you live in the UK, the answer is, "nothing". If you live in the USA or Canada, you have more options. Aside from the movies and a handful of restaurants, some stores are open on Christmas Day. Despite what you may assume, Walmart and Target are both closed on Christmas Day.
