haiti another earthquake

haiti another earthquake

In Haiti, another earthquake was the last thing needed. Yet today, another Haiti earthquake/aftershock struck with nearly as much force as the last one. In fact, the aftershock rated a 6.1 on the Richter scale, just .9 less than the 7.0 that battered the nation. The death toll and damage can't be as bad as last week's quake, especially since there's much less to destroy now. But in Haiti, another earthquake continues the seemingly unending nightmare.

Since this was a mere aftershock, and not a full fledged earthquake, the damage shouldn't be as extensive. Yet considering how Haiti has barely cleared the damage from the last earthquake, more tremors are not welcome - especially ones that rate a 6.0.

There are no official totals yet on the damage and in how many more may have been killed. According to Yahoo News, this time the center was 35 miles west-southwest of Port-au-Prince. If there is any consolation, it's that another Haiti earthquake occurred farther away from the battered capital.Yahoo also reports that more rubble was shaken from the buildings, and people were once more running through the streets. What's more, no one knows if this was the most severe aftershock possible.

Thus far, according to the USGS, 40 aftershocks have already occurred as a result of the Haiti earthquake. This was merely the biggest one, but if this trend continues on longer, there could be larger tremors on the way.

Haiti faced another earthquake just over a week after the first deadly strike. The nation was already ill equipped to face the first one, for various reasons. Further natural disasters, so soon after the first tragedy, threaten the precious little left that the people need to survive. However, it only illuminates how a quick fix is impossible.

Aid and telethons can only do so much in the short term, but the long term is another story. Within a few more weeks, the nation will likely fade out of the headlines, as other stories and scandals emerge. But Haiti will still face further horrors when the world isn't paying attention anymore. Aftershocks and another Haiti earthquake may only be the beginning of it.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches.[1] A Baptist minister,[2] King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

Two plays into Thursday’s Texas Bowl, as Missouri wideout Danario Alexander sliced through Navy’s defense for a 58-yard touchdown, the week’s prevailing question never seemed more relevant.
Could Navy, undersized and physically overmatched, hang with Missouri?
Turns out, it was just the opposite.
Before a half-empty crowd at Reliant Stadium — bowl organizers claimed more than 69,000 seats were sold — the Tigers couldn’t keep up with Navy in a 35-13 loss.
While Missouri’s offense sputtered the rest of the way, Navy (10-4) time and again burned the Tigers via both ground and air.
Junior Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs, named the game’s most valuable player, ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for another.

Minnesota’s life post-Glen Mason has been nothing if not Mason-esque, with the Gophers struggling through back-to-back six-loss seasons under Tim Brewster. Oh, did I mention that Minnesota went 1-11 in 2007, Brewster’s first season as Mason’s replacement? It hasn’t been pretty, and even with Brewster’s strong recruiting — the reason he landed the job — Minnesota badly needs a win against Iowa State to salvage its season. A loss to mediocre, albeit well-coached I.S.U. would really put Brewster on the hot seat entering 2010. By the way, this is the third time Minnesota finds itself in the Insight Bowl in the last four seasons. The Gophers lost to Kansas, 42-21, in the 2008 bowl, while a 44-41 loss to Texas Tech in 2006 cost Mason his job. With a loss to the Cyclones, Brewster may be able to commiserate with his predecessor.
