recession over

Recession Over

The National Bureau of Economic Research, a Cambridge-based non-profit research organization that announces start and end dates of economic recessions, declared Monday that the recent U.S. recession officially ended in June 2009—well over a year ago.

The report was released by the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee, a seven-person committee that includes three Harvard faculty, and established that the trough in national economic productivity occurred in June 2009.

Since then, measures of economic performance such as gross domestic product have indicated that the nation has entered the recovery stage.

This evaluation, however, does not address the fact that the economy still remains far from its pre-recession level of activity.

As political economy professor James H. Stock, a member of the NBER’s Business Cycle Dating Committee, said, “businesses are keenly aware that economic activity remains well below its potential.”

Several key indicators suggest economic weakness and hint against the progression of a robust economic recovery.

Stock noted that the consumer savings rate, currently at 5.9 percent, has remained extremely elevated since the trough of the recession, a problem that continues to plague small business owners by causing a lack of aggregate demand.

Consumers have continued to act as if the prospects of recovery are dim, and their unwillingness to spend hampers the recovery of consumer-driven businesses.

And while GDP has rebounded significantly, unemployment levels—a measure that typically lags behind productivity when a country is emerging from a recession—are still high, said Stock.

Of an estimated 8.5 million jobs lost during the recession, only 1.3 million have been recovered.

“From an employment perspective,” Stock said, “we are not anywhere near where we want to be. There are an enormous number of people without work.”

More than 20 models trusted their luxurious locks to seasoned professionals Tuesday night as part of the second annual Hair Ball, a fundraiser for the Community Foundation of West Georgia.

Six salons from Carrollton and Villa Rica participated, creating atypical hairstyles showcasing the talents of local stylists. A mixture of hairdos were on display throughout the night as the models, with hair piled through and around a variety of hair pieces, walked around the show at Sunset Hills Country Club.

Jamie Best, owner and stylist at J. Best Hair Co., said she participated last year with a different salon.

boardwalk empire

boardwalk empire

After a couple of Martin Scorsese's trademark tracking shots, which followed Nucky Thompson's exit from the Ritz Hotel and his arrival at Babette's nightclub, we got to the meat of the first episode of 'Boardwalk Empire': Nucky arrived at a dinner party, at which we met Atlantic City's power players and began to understand their relationships and conflicts.

Perhaps it's not surprising that, as the show's sumptuous pilot unfolded and Nucky and company dug into a lavish supper, a food analogy came to mind.

If 'Boardwalk Empire' were a meal, it would be an incredibly delicious traditional dish. It's not experimental; it's not giving us flavors we've never tried before or taking radical chances with familiar ingredients. 'Boardwalk Empire' is a classic dish prepared with exceptional skill and attention to detail.

herriman fire

herriman fire

• A fire that first danced across a ridge top plunged downward late Sunday, sweeping into Herriman’s southern neighborhoods.

Responders and residents sprinted away from homes as 50 mph winds fanned flames from a wildfire that began Sunday afternoon at a machine gun firing range at Utah National Guard’s Camp Williams.

“It’s chaos,” said Salt Lake County sheriff’s Lt. Don Hutson as he helped move residents out of their homes.

At least 1,400 homes had been evacuated as of midnight and some had caught fire, said emergency responders who descended on Herriman from across the valley and pushed through crowds of onlookers.

Meanwhile, as many as 250 evacuees waited for updates at a Red Cross center at Herriman High School.

It was late December 2005 in Palo Alto, California, and Silicon Valley’s newest wunderkind wasn’t feeling the holiday glee. Upstairs in a busy loft decorated with Christmas lights and Family Guy posters, Facebook’s 21-year-old founder Mark Zuckerberg ambled from an elevator. I had come to talk with him about his life and site, which was just then gaining steam. He was followed by his business partner and former Harvard roommate, Dustin Moskovitz, on a Razor scooter.

“You want to ask us some questions about sexual harassment?” Zuckerberg asked me, half-jokingly, as he flopped into a chair and kicked off his worn Adidas sandals. Moskovitz brandished a fistful of papers with an impish grin. The two had just left a lengthy seminar on the subject, a requirement for doing business here and a small part of being the Internet’s next big thing.

The beer tents at Oktoberfest were packed Saturday even before the mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, had officially inaugurated the annual festival beer with two whacks of a hammer to open the first keg.

This year's Oktoberfest, set to run till October 4, is the first where smoking is banned. Munich is standing by for 6 million visits.

At noon, Ude, wearing Bavarian leather shorts and a green apron, performed the traditional opening ceremony: hammering a tap into the first wooden barrel of beer using a 3-kilogram hand mallet. He then handed out mugs of beer to VIP guests.
