Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham, Washington caught fire this morning around 1 a.m. Flames were first reported on the roof. By 1:15, the fire had spread across two-thirds of the 106 year old building. Firefighters made a quick sweep of the building and did not find anyone inside.
At 6 a.m., the school was still burning but the fire had been contained to the top floor. The fire destroyed most of the roof. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
Roads surrounding the school were shut down and detours were set up. Whatcome Middle School is closed Thursday and Friday. School officials have not determined what will be done for the remainder of the school year.
Whatcom Middle school was built in 1903 and currently has 580 students. It has been undergoing a seismic retrofit since last year.
