insight bowl

insight bowl

Minnesota’s life post-Glen Mason has been nothing if not Mason-esque, with the Gophers struggling through back-to-back six-loss seasons under Tim Brewster. Oh, did I mention that Minnesota went 1-11 in 2007, Brewster’s first season as Mason’s replacement? It hasn’t been pretty, and even with Brewster’s strong recruiting — the reason he landed the job — Minnesota badly needs a win against Iowa State to salvage its season. A loss to mediocre, albeit well-coached I.S.U. would really put Brewster on the hot seat entering 2010. By the way, this is the third time Minnesota finds itself in the Insight Bowl in the last four seasons. The Gophers lost to Kansas, 42-21, in the 2008 bowl, while a 44-41 loss to Texas Tech in 2006 cost Mason his job. With a loss to the Cyclones, Brewster may be able to commiserate with his predecessor.
